Street children’s rights amid Bangladesh unrest

Following a trustees meeting on Saturday 7th September, Friends of Street Children Bangladesh (FSCBD) held a special discussion in response to the upheaval during the summer of 2024, marked by widespread public unrest and a student-led shift in government in Bangladesh. FSCBD expressed deep concern during this period over the inability to establish contact with the LEEDO Peace Home due to an internet blackout.

The discussion, held both in person and online, featured speakers who highlighted the impact of the crisis on vulnerable children. They spoke of the closure of public services, the fear of going out to buy food, and reports of children being mistreated, and even beaten by authorities during the riots. One speaker said that over 66 children died during the unrest. The discussion underscored the ongoing uncertainty and life-threatening situations faced by street children.

FSCBD has reached out to the UK Government twice, seeking assurance about the children’s safety, but is yet to receive a response.
